Your Guide to Funding Options for Mobility & Assistive Equipment

Choosing the right equipment is important—understanding how to fund it shouldn’t be complicated. This page explains the main funding types our customers use and how they work in practice.

NDIS funding

NDIS Funding Types

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports eligible Australians under 65 living with permanent and significant disability. The way your plan is managed determines how equipment purchases and hire are processed.

Self-Managed

You pay providers directly and claim reimbursement through the NDIS portal.
You can use any provider; they do not need to be NDIS-registered.
Gives you maximum flexibility and control over how and where you purchase equipment.

Plan-Managed

A plan manager receives and pays invoices on your behalf.
You can generally use registered or unregistered providers.
Your plan manager looks after the financial administration and record-keeping.

NDIA-Managed (Agency-Managed)

The NDIA pays providers directly through the NDIS portal.
You must use NDIS-registered providers only.
Suited to participants wanting very low administrative responsibility.

How this applies to your equipment
We work with self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants every day. We can prepare itemised quotes that match your funding type and provide invoices in the format required by plan managers and the NDIA.
Assistive technology

What NDIS Budget Covers Equipment?

Most mobility and daily living equipment is funded through the Assistive Technology (AT) budget in your NDIS plan.

Examples of items commonly funded under AT

Walkers and rollators
Mobility scooters and wheelchairs (manual and powered)
Adjustable and hospital-style beds
Bathroom equipment and shower commodes
Transfer aids and hoists
Pressure care cushions and mattresses

AT levels and evidence requirements

Low-cost AT (Level 1–2): Usually under $1,500 and often does not require a quote.
Mid/high-cost AT (Level 3–4): May require an occupational therapy assessment, quotes or AT forms.
Aged care funding

Aged Care Funding (My Aged Care & ACAT)

Older Australians may be able to fund equipment through the aged care system instead of, or in addition to, the NDIS. This generally applies to people aged 65+ (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).

Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)

Provides entry-level support for people who need one or two basic services.
Some equipment may be provided or arranged through CHSP-funded service providers.
Usually involves a small co-payment from the person receiving services.
Official government resource

Home Care Packages (HCP)

Provides ongoing home care funding across four package levels.
Equipment can often be funded where it is reasonable and necessary for your care needs.
Your Home Care Package provider approves purchases and arranges payment from your package.

ACAT / ACAS assessment

To access CHSP or Home Care Packages you will usually need an assessment from an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT), or Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS) in Victoria.
The assessment helps determine what level of support and type of program is most appropriate.
